Scarecrow Contest a Creepy, Creative Pumpkin Festival Favorite

scarecrow contestWhen it comes to dreaming up scarecrows, the folks in the World Pumpkin Capital of Half Moon Bay are experts in the “field.” This year’s 11th annual Scarecrow Contest, held in conjunction with the Art & Pumpkin Festival, will bring out everything from the charmingly classic to the unimaginably ghoulish. “We’ve had talking trees, some very voluptuous models, and some great sports figures,” said Kris Mason, Contest Curator. “During election years we’ve even had some that looked like George W. Bush and Uncle Sam.”

As always, the contest is sure to bring out the best in Coastsider creativity and creepiness. Contestants are encouraged to be as whimsical, creative and comical as possible in designing their entries. Using real pumpkins and other perishable items is NOT allowed.

Contest categories include local Businesses, Families, Classrooms, and Non-Profit Groups. The first-place prize in each category is $200. Second place earns $100 and third place receives $50. The last day to enter is Friday, October 5. Contest entry is free.

Entries will be judged on originality, creativity and presentation by an independent panel of judges with a creative bent. Judging will take place at the First National Bank at 756 Main Street, on Sunday, October 12, at 1 p.m.

Winning entries will be on display the next day, Monday, October 12, at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh Off awards luncheon at IDES Hall.

Entry forms will be available at First National Bank or by contacting  Kris Mason at 650-726-7780 or e-mail krismason@coastside.net.
