Kirchen’s impact and legacy run deep. In 1972, with Commander Cody at the helm, Kirchen put his signature "Big Rig" Telecaster Guitar Sound to "Hot Rod Lincoln" and it became a top 10 single.
A generation of gear heads lusted for yet more power as he transformed the twanging Fender guitar into the muscle car of music. Banging on the big string with piston like insistence, Bill Kirchen has continued to elevate his genre, that we now call "Americana” music.
His recent album,"Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods” has taken him to the top of the Americana music charts and his appearances with Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris and other musical masters have become a highlight at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco.
Reviews from the 2007 concert listed him as "a hero of the electric guitar, who has been recording records of storming rockabilly, blues, and country music." Kirchen is recognized by his peers as one of the most thrilling roots-music guitarist alive.
For the past 12 years, Kirchen’s solo records have featured such songs as "Rockabilly Funeral", "Truck Stop at the End of the World”, and "Poultry in Motion" (nominated in 2001 for a Grammy for best country instrumental).
His poetic masterpieces about his many years looking at the world through a windshield have resulted in his music being dubbed “Dieselbilly” by friend Nick Lowe. Yes, the prodigal son has finally come home.
Bill Kirchen has appeared on record and stage with a who’s who of talent that includes Nick Lowe, Doug Sahm, Ralph Stanley, Gene Vincent, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Hoyt Axton, Link Wray and Danny Gatton. He is featured in the TNN special, Yesterday & Today: Honky Tonk & Western Swing.
At last year’s Dream Machines Show, Kirchen and his band mates were an absolute explosion. He took to what was the old Half Moon Bay Drag Strip, fired up his powerful Telecaster and the crowd dropped their wrenches and began to smile. This is a crowd that respects the Honky Tonk Truck N' Roll and we knew we had found our Grand Marshal.
Claddagh, the soulful troubadours of San Francisco have legions of devoted fans around the Bay. Bandleader Kevin Brennan insists on sharing the spotlight but his rare vocal prowess as a true Belfast Balladeer is what has always attracted the best of Bay area talent to join his caravan of performers.
Brennan's story began long before he formed the Claddagh band in 1979. He was previously based in Belfast where he and friend Van Morrison were soaking up and playing a wide range of Rock, Folk, Country music from around the world.
Whether it’s Johnny Cash, the Rolling Stones or original material, Claddagh’s music is played with authenticity. Harmonica player Grant Walters has added more blues and rock influence to the mix for the past decade. His experience with Stu Blank, Matt Brewer and other rhythm and blues groups mesh well with drummer Royce Bandle's many years on the same circuit. Sax/flute ace Gary MacArthur forms the horn section, bringing his own unique sound.
Songwriter and guitar master Marty Atkinson is the latest addition to the group. His four CD's demonstrate a professional understanding of most stringed instruments and some of his original material will be featured. As always, the most anticipated portion the Claddagh perfomance is the "guest performer" portion of the show (usually at 11:00 AM). As the host band, Claddagh, always brings up surprise guest performers who take it over the top. Claddagh will perform from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
