Two full days of live music on stage and street turn downtown Mountain View into the Bay Area’s entertainment hotspot for A La Carte & Art, May 16-17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Castro Street. Music lovers will enjoy eleven bands playing a diverse musical menu ranging from classic rock-and-roll, Latin Jazz and high energy dance music to contemporary country, Cajun zydeco and original rhythm and blues.
If the Joan Jett anthem “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” is the ring tone on your phone, then make sure you’re at thet main stage on Saturday morning to catch the classic rock of Chubby’s All Stars. Comprised of “a bunch of old hippies,” according to band founder Roger “Chubby” Henson, the band will play originals, along with covers of the great music of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Traffic, The Grateful Dead, and other standouts of the 60s music scene.
If it’s country that makes you kick up your heels, be sure to catch the Fred McCarty Band. Backed by a host of top-rate musicians, McCarty will perform Texas swing, Cajun, contemporary country, and historic Western music. Blending influences from Gene Autry, Roy Orbison, Merle Haggard, and Bob Wills with McCarty’s own, unique musicality, audiences will be hard pressed to hold back when this dynamic band hits the stage.
Jazz up your Saturday afternoon with Soul Intention. This high-energy San Jose band has one goal–to fill your ears with soulful renditions in the vein of “Tower of Power” and “Earth, Wind, and Fire.” Known for its powerful horn section, rich harmonies, and the commanding vocals of Scott Kologzieski, Soul Intention is sure to enhance your afternoon of wine and art.
Get back to the A-B-Cs of ‘60s rock ‘n’ roll with Old School. Guitarist Ed Olsen says the five band members are united in one vision—having a blast re-creating the great, upbeat tunes of ‘60s pop rock. And boy, does it show! Playing such invigorating tunes as “This Diamond Ring,” and “These Boots are Made for Walkin’,” the band puts enthusiasm and energy into every chord, every vocal, and every mod move.

If you’re a fan of “The Sopranos,” then you already know that the words mama Luke is the Italian equivalent of—to put it nicely—you stupid idiot. But up and coming Bay Area band Mama Luke can only be described as brilliant in its faithful renditions of classic rock. Playing the best from icons like Tom Petty, John Cougar Mellencamp, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and Counting Crows, Mama Luke stood out among dozens of other competitors to snag a second place finish in KFOX’s Last Band Standing contest.
The Hitmen have been delivering high energy dance music for audiences up and down the West Coast for twelve years. This nine-piece band plays the best hits from the 70s to modern day favorites, like “Le Freak,” “September,” “Sex Machine,” “Billie Jean,” “Boogie Nights,” and much, much more. The Hitmen have performed with the likes of Cameo, the Ohio Players, Confunktion, Harold Melvin's Blue Notes, Pete Escovedo and with members of Santana and Tower of Power. Their hot horn section and funky groove is guaranteed to get your toes tapping and booty shaking.
Beyond the main stage you will find a host of talented street musicians. Kaweh will be bringing his own eclectic version of world music to the festival. Lead guitarist, vocalist and composer Kaweh and his group of talented international musicians weave a rich tapestry of sound, with influences from Latin jazz, rumba flamenco, Brazil, the Mediterranean and Middle East. Whether playing their original upbeat rhythms and romantic ballads or popular covers from groups like the Gypsy Kings, Kaweh connects with the audience in a special way. With his special blend of soft jazz, rhythm and blues, and a touch of country, Emerson is a rare treat for music lovers. His deep, gentle voice takes the listener back to a time when you where sitting in Grandpa's lap on the porch swing, and his original, vibrant beats and melodies will get your heart and feet wanting to dance along. Savor the romantic music of Dreamroad, with wind player Laura Bryant and keyboardist Max Gutierrez. This San Mateo duo combines lush flutes, recorders, keyboards and hammered dulcimer into beautiful and spiritual melodies that reflect a diverse cultural heritage.
Jose Cabezas of Ancient Winds plays his own unique compositions on handmade flutes, touching the hearts and souls of everyone who sees him. His music is soft and gentle, mysterious and haunting, inspired by the cultures of the United States and his native Ecuador. Al Fabrizio of HeartStrings Music still recalls his childhood in Italy and the heartwarming melodies his father used to play on the old mandolin. Now he is recreating those melodies himself with his “tremolo” style on the Neapolitan mandolin, accompanied by his partner Hugo Wainzinger on the guitar.
